The background story of Saint Anthony, Performer of Miracles

Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195 to a wealthy family. At age 15, he joined the Augustinian order but eventually became a Franciscan friar. Saint Anthony became known for his powerful preaching and deep devotion to the poor, sick, and oppressed. His reputation for performing miracles led to his nickname, “the performer of miracles.”

After Saint Anthony’s death in 1231, he was quickly canonized by the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on June 13th and he is the patron saint of lost and stolen articles, travelers, and the poor.

The Performer of Miracles Catholic Prayer, also known as the “Unfailing Prayer to Saint Anthony” is a popular prayer to ask for Saint Anthony’s intercession in finding lost or stolen items. Many believers also pray to Saint Anthony for strength and guidance in difficult situations.

The prayer goes, “Saint Anthony, great wonder-worker, intercede for me that God may grant me what I ask, if it be according to His holy will. O blessed Saint Anthony, I beseech thee, obtain for me what I request. O pure and holy servant of God, inflame my heart with fervent love for Him. Amen.”
