O Jesus, Who by reason of Thy burning love for us
hast willed to be crucified
and to shed Thy Most Precious Blood
for the redemption and salvation of our souls,
look down upon us here gathered together
in remembrance of Thy most sorrowful Passion and Death,
fully trusting in Thy mercy;
cleanse us from sin by Thy grace,
sanctify our toil,
give unto us and unto all those who are dear to us our
daily bread,
sweeten our sufferings,
bless our families,
and to the nations so sorely afflicted,
grant Thy peace,
which is the only true peace,
so that by obeying Thy commandments
we may come at last to the glory of heaven.
Amen.
The timeline of Good Friday Prayer
Good Friday is an important day in the Christian faith as it commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Good Friday Prayer is a Catholic prayer that is often recited on this day in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice.
The Good Friday Prayer is also known as The Solemn Intercessions or The Long Prayer. This prayer is comprised of a series of petitions that are presented by the priest, asking for God’s mercy and granting us strength as we strive to follow in Jesus’ footsteps.
The origins of the Good Friday Prayer can be traced back to the early Christian Church. During the early centuries of Christianity, the Church established the tradition of holding special services on Good Friday, including the recitation of prayers and hymns.
Over time, the Good Friday Prayer evolved to include the various needs and concerns of the community. It became a way for the faithful to come together and pray for those who were suffering, for those who were in need, and for those who were seeking God’s mercy.
Today, the Good Friday Prayer remains an important part of the Catholic Church’s liturgy, and it is recited in churches around the world on this solemn day. The prayer offers hope and comfort to believers as they reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins.
