An Examination of Conscience

Dear God, as I begin this Examination of Conscience, I invite You into my heart and my mind. Help me to be honest with myself and to see the areas in my life where I need to grow and change.

As I reflect on my actions and thoughts, I ask Your forgiveness for the times when I have failed to love You with all my heart and soul and for the times when I have failed to love my neighbor as myself.

I ask Your forgiveness for the times when I have been selfish, unkind, or judgmental towards others. Help me to see each person as Your beloved child, deserving of love and respect.

I examine my words and actions, and I ask Your forgiveness for any times when I have lied, gossiped, or caused harm to others. Help me to be truthful, kind, and compassionate in all my interactions.

As I examine my thoughts and desires, I ask You to forgive me for any times when I have given in to temptation or allowed myself to be distracted from what is truly important. Help me to focus on You and to seek Your will for my life.

Finally, I ask Your forgiveness for any times when I have failed to care for the world around me. Help me to be a good steward of Your creation and to use my gifts and talents for the benefit of others and the world around me.

Thank You for Your mercy, Your love, and Your grace. Help me to grow in holiness and to become the person that You created me to be. Amen.

An Examination of Conscience is a Catholic prayer that is said as a part of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The prayer is a reflection on one’s thoughts, words, and deeds in order to identify areas where one has fallen short and seek forgiveness from God.

The roots of the Examination of Conscience prayer can be traced back to the early Christian Church, where the practice of confessing one’s sins to a priest was established. It became a part of Catholic liturgy in the Middle Ages, and it remains an important part of the Church’s sacramental life today.

The prayer is a call to self-examination and a reminder of the importance of sincere repentance and reconciliation with God. It is a way for believers to take responsibility for their actions and seek forgiveness for any harm they may have caused.

The Examination of Conscience prayer has been adapted and modified over the years, but its core message remains the same – to recognize our sins, seek God’s mercy, and resolve to live a more virtuous and loving life.

Today, the Examination of Conscience is often used as a form of personal reflection and is included in many Catholic prayer books and devotions. It is a reminder that we are all sinners in need of God’s mercy and that we must be honest with ourselves about our failures and shortcomings in order to grow in faith and love.
