Prayer before the Closing of the Day

Before the closing of the day,
Creator, we Thee humbly pray,
That, for Thy wonted mercy’s sake,
Thou us under protection take.
May nothing in our minds excite
Vain dreams and phantoms of the night;
Our enemies repress, that so
Our bodies no uncleanness know.
In this, most gracious Father, hear,
With Christ, Thy equal Son, our prayer;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.

Amen.

The story of Prayer before the Closing of the Day

The Prayer before the Closing of the Day, also known as the Night Prayer, is a Christian prayer that has its origins in the monastic tradition of the early Church.

Monks would gather together in the evening to offer prayers of thanksgiving for the day that had passed and to ask for God’s protection through the night. The prayer became popular among the laity in the Middle Ages and has been a staple of Christian devotion ever since.

The prayer is meant to be recited at the end of the day, as a way of acknowledging God’s presence throughout the day and asking for his continued guidance and protection during the night. It is often used as a way of settling the mind and heart before going to sleep.

The Prayer before the Closing of the Day has undergone numerous revisions over the centuries, but its central message of gratitude, trust, and surrender to God remains the same.

It is a simple and powerful prayer that reminds us of God’s constant presence in our lives and invites us to place our trust in him, even as we rest and sleep.

Today, the Prayer before the Closing of the Day is used by Christians of all denominations as a way of expressing their faith and seeking comfort and strength in God’s love. It is a testament to the enduring power of prayer and the eternal hope and promise of God’s care for his people.
